Exloring the Pantry

1915

Can you imagine slipping alone into Babcia’s pantry when you are only five years old?
You are welcomed by a sharp rush of sour curdled milk and pungent cheese. Overhead, dark ropes of smoked sausages drip, casting savory shadows in the dim light. Baskets of garden vegetables line the floor. On the shelves, crushed herbs and mysterious spices tickle your nose, while rows of glittering glass jars stand ready for the winter ahead.
But the most interesting treasures hide inside the dark wood cabinet. You know that behind those doors, Babcia keeps her most precious rewards: sugar, honey, jams, and the last chocolate bars that have survived the war.
