1918
December 1918. Poland has regained Independence on 11 November 1918, and for a few glorious weeks, the children of Warsaw manage to forget about the bitter cold and their rumbling stomachs. They expect nothing special for Mikołajki, the traditional Saint Nicholas celebration on December 6, assuming the war-torn winter would remain bleak. But miracles happen. Teacher nun, Siostra Scholastyka, has received a surprise shipment of fresh oranges and chocolate from the Red Cross. To make the day unforgettable, Święty Mikołaj himself comes for the distribution, an event immortalized in a commemorative classroom photograph. Siostra Scholastyka refuses to hand over a single treat until she delivers a thorough blackboard lesson on tropical fruits. Finally released from her lecture, the kids rush home clutching their precious prizes. Most of them have long forgot the taste of orange and chocolate.
