The first cucumber harvest is always a frantic mess in Babcia’s kitchen, with baskets overflowing into every corner of the house. If you don’t pick them fast enough in the garden, they balloon into Zeppelin-sized giants that refuse to fit in any boiling pan. One summer, Babcia pulled an ogórek so terrifyingly massive it looked like a wart-covered monster ready to breathe fire. The kids were fascinated. Drafted into the kitchen battalion and armed with a saw, they had to wage a fierce battle to hack the green colossus down to size.
